The 12 Best Rug Brands to Shop for Online

Nicolina Savelli

There are many different types of rugs on the market today, and even more brands that sell them. To make sure you’re getting the best rug possible, it’s a good idea to research which brands are known to produce high-quality products that will stand the test of time and be comfortable underfoot every day. But it can be difficult to know exactly what you’re getting when shopping for a rug online; especially if rug brands are not using high quality imagery to showcase the details of their products (Live Furnish clients never have this problem *wink*).

So, we're here to simplify the rug buying experience by showcasing brands that you’ve likely already seen on Wayfair, Amazon, Rugs Direct, Home Depot and more, but just didn't know the brand behind the rug.

Below you’ll find 12 of the highest quality rug brands in the industry today. These rug brands not only create great products, but they also make shopping for a rug online easy. Now, you can purchase the perfect rug without ever having to leave the comfort of your own home.

Before You Shop for a Rug

Before we dive into our favorite rug brands, it's important we explore what to look for when purchasing a rug. Of course taste, style, and size are all deciding factors when selecting the right rug but you likely already have those in mind before you browse for rugs online. So, we'll cut to the more technical details you'll need to look out for when determining your rug of choice.

The three main categories we'll review are: materials used, style of rug, and pile height.

Rug Materials to Consider

The style of a rug is more often than not dependant on the materials and composition of a rug. You'll want to keep this in mind when selecting the right rug for your space. According to Apartment Therapy, the most common materials to look out for are:

Natural fibers: Wool, cotton, silk, jute, sisal
Why: They are durable and long-lasting; wool rugs, specifically, are best at maintaining their appearance overtime.
Why not: Often pricier and require professional cleaning; dyed silk rugs can run if exposed to water spills.

Synthetic fibers: Acrylic, polyester, polypropylene
Why: Affordable, easier to clean, usually stain-resistant.
Why not: Not the most sustainable or long-lasting. Synthetic materials can become contaminated with mildew and bacteria from repeated spills or pet accidents and may need replacing sooner in comparison to natural fibers.

Artificial silk: Viscose, bamboo silk, banana silk
Why: Very affordable; busy patterns can conceal dirt.
Why not: Hard to maintain, especially in high traffic areas. Viscose absorbs moisture and oil,  but even a plain water spill can ruin fibers.

Hopefully, by knowing the versatility and durability of these materials will help make shopping for rugs online even easier.

Rug Styles to Keep in Mind

You've likely heard many of these terms used to describe rugs before, but it's worth organizing them in specific categories since many eCommerce stores typically do to. This should help you properly navigate to the right spot when shopping online for rugs. Here you'll see the style matched with the type of rug you'll find under each category.
  • Traditional: Persian, Oriental, Moroccan, Berber (can be antique and vintage pieces)
  • Contemporary: Mid-Century, Geometric, Coastal, Country, Farmhouse
  • Natural: Jute, Sisal, Silk, Sheepskin, Leather, Cowhide
  • Bohemian: Shag, Kilim, Dhurrie, Southwest, Ikat
By this point you should have a sound understanding of the material you're looking to purchase and the style of rug you want. Now all that's left is determining the pile height or the overall thickness of a rug.

Pile Height and Why It's Important

The “pile” of a rug refers to the density, or thickness, of a piece.

Rug pile generally falls into three categories:

  • Low-pile rugs (less than ¼ inch): These rugs have shorter fibers and loops (think flat weaves), and are easy to vacuum.
  • Medium-pile rugs (¼ to ½ inch): These rugs are softer than low pile, are still relatively easy to clean, and are ideal for living rooms and bedrooms where you may want more comfort underfoot.
  • High-pile rugs (½ to ¾ inch): These rugs have taller, looser fibers (think shag or Moroccan rugs), making them more plush and ideal for the bedroom or living room.

According to Tufenkian Artisan Carpets, piles longer than ¾ inch aren’t quite as common and are usually designated as “plush” pile height because the longer the pile gets, the softer the rug feels. In contrast, the fibers in low-pile rugs tend to be more tightly woven and dense, causing them to feel and seem flat—even coarse at times.
It's important to keep pile height in mind when shopping for the perfect rug online. Although you may love a pattern or a style of rug, it may not be functional for the space you're working with. Typically, the rule of thumb is that the thicker the carpet and rugs, the lower the durability, however, high pile rugs tend to be softer and look more luxurious, which means you're likely to spend a few more dollars on a high pile carpet versus medium or low pile.

Tufenkian Artisan Carpets

Tufenkian Artisan Carpets began 30 years ago, and has revolutionized the Oriental rug business. Tufenkian carpets prides themselves on doing everything possible to satisfy the increasing consumer demand for instant gratification by keeping a huge stock of rugs “on-hand” in a range of sizes for immediate delivery.

Tufenkian Studio provides hand-knotted carpets, arguably the most difficult and time consuming to create. A 9'x12' foot Tufenkian carpet is composed of up to 1.5 million individually hand-tied knots and range from more affordable to high end designs, with attractive alternatives to choose from, whatever the requirement.
